Privacy Policy
Introduction
We at Sum Bug respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you use our online calculator tools (the “Site”), how we use and share that information, and your choices and rights regarding your data. You can use our calculators without creating an account or providing personal information, but some usage data is collected automatically to help us improve the service.
By using the Site, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
Information We Collect
No Personal Information Required: We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not directly collect personally identifiable information such as your name, email address, or contact details. In general, you can use the Site anonymously.
Usage Data: However, when you use our calculators, certain technical and usage information is collected automatically by our analytics and error-monitoring services. This data may include:
- IP Address: Your device’s IP address (which may be anonymized for analytics purposes) and an approximate geolocation (e.g. city or country level).
- Device and Browser Information: Details about your web browser type and version, operating system, device type (e.g. mobile or desktop), and other device identifiers or settings.
- Usage Activity: Information about how you interact with the Site, such as the pages or calculator tools you visit, the date and time of your visit, calculations performed or buttons clicked, and the duration of your session.
- Error Logs: If an error or crash occurs while you are using the Site, technical information about the error is collected (for example, the error message, the sequence of actions that led to the error, and your browser/device information at the time).
Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Our Site uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to enhance your experience and collect usage data:
- Cookies: Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use first-party cookies through our analytics provider (Google Analytics) to distinguish unique users and understand user behavior over time. These cookies collect information about your browsing activities on our Site (for instance, which pages you visit and how long you stay). You can adjust your browser settings to refuse cookies or to alert you when a cookie is being placed. Note that if you disable or block cookies, the Site’s core calculator functions will still work, but our ability to gather analytics information will be limited.
- No Personal Tracking: We do not use any advertising cookies or third-party trackers beyond the analytics and error-monitoring tools described in this policy. We do not serve targeted ads, and we do not track your browsing activities across other websites.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- To Analyze Usage and Improve the Site: Analytics data (collected via Google Analytics) helps us understand how users engage with our Site. For example, it can tell us which calculator tools are most popular, how users navigate between pages, or whether some features are confusing or underused. We use these insights to improve our content, design, and user experience.
- To Monitor and Fix Errors: Error reports (collected via Sentry) let us know when something goes wrong (such as a calculation bug or a page failing to load). The technical information in these reports helps us quickly diagnose the problem and deploy a fix, ensuring the Site works smoothly and reliably.
- To Ensure Security and Prevent Misuse: We may use certain data (like IP addresses or usage patterns) to protect the Site and its users. This includes detecting and preventing malicious activities or abuse (for example, blocking repeated misuse or defending against denial-of-service attacks).
Importantly, we do not use the data we collect to identify you personally or to profile you individually. All information is analyzed in aggregate or used only for troubleshooting technical issues. We do not sell your data to any third parties.
Third-Party Service Providers
We rely on a couple of trusted third-party services to operate key features of our Site. These providers collect and process data on our behalf for the purposes described above:
- Google Analytics: We use Google Analytics to collect anonymized statistical information about how visitors use the Site. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies and similar technologies to gather information such as your IP address (with IP anonymization enabled whenever possible), browser type, device type, and pages visited. This information is transmitted to Google and compiled into aggregate reports that help us understand overall user behavior. Google does not provide us with any personally identifying information about you. For more details on Google’s practices, please see Google’s Privacy Policy. If you wish to opt out of Google Analytics tracking, you can install the official Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on.
- Sentry (Error Monitoring): We use Sentry (a service by Sentry.io) to monitor and log software errors on the Site. When an error occurs, Sentry automatically captures relevant technical data — such as the error message, the portion of code or action that caused the error, your device and browser details, and your IP address — and sends it securely to us. This information helps us debug the issue. We do not intentionally send any personal information through these error logs, and Sentry filters out sensitive data where possible. Sentry stores error report data securely and retains it only for a limited time to allow us to review and fix the problem. For more information, you can review Sentry’s own Privacy Policy.
These third-party providers have access to data only to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for other purposes. We have configured our use of these services to respect privacy as much as feasible (for example, by anonymizing IP addresses in Google Analytics).
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, trade, or rent your information to any outside parties. The data we collect is used strictly for the purposes explained in this policy. We share data only in the following circumstances:
- With Service Providers: As described above, your usage data and error data are shared with our analytics and monitoring service providers (Google and Sentry) to the extent necessary for them to provide those services. They process data under our instructions and in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
- For Legal Reasons: We may disclose information about you if we are required to do so by law or valid legal process (for example, in response to a court order, subpoena, or other governmental request), or if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to comply with applicable laws. We may also disclose information as needed to enforce our Terms of Service or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public.
Aside from the cases above, we do not share your personal information with third parties. In particular, we do not share any data with advertisers or marketing companies, and we have no social media plugins or ad networks collecting data on our Site.
Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously. We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to safeguard the information collected through our Site from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. For example, our Site is hosted on a secure platform and delivered via a reputable content delivery network (Cloudflare), and data transmitted to our analytics and error-tracking providers is encrypted via HTTPS.
However, please note that no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You should also take precautions on your end — for instance, use strong passwords on your devices and networks, and avoid using the Site on unsecured public Wi-Fi — to help protect your own information.
Your Data Protection Rights
We aim to comply with applicable data protection laws worldwide, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Depending on where you reside, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to Access: You have the right to request a copy of any personal data we may hold about you. (Since we intentionally collect very little personal data, in most cases this would be limited to technical logs or correspondence you’ve sent us.)
- Right to Rectification: If you believe that any information we have collected is inaccurate or incomplete, you have the right to ask us to correct it.
- Right to Erasure: You have the right to request that we delete personal data we hold about you. Keep in mind that, because we do not collect identifying personal information in the normal course of using the Site, we may not have any data that is directly attributable to you. However, if you have contacted us via email or if some of your data is identifiable in analytics logs, we will make efforts to remove it upon request.
- Right to Restrict Processing: You can request that we restrict our processing of your data in certain circumstances. For example, you might disable analytics tracking (by using the opt-out tools mentioned above or browser settings) to limit data collection.
- Right to Object: If applicable, you have the right to object to certain types of processing, such as the use of data for analytics. In practice, if you do not want any analytics data collected, you can use the opt-out methods or contact us to discuss other options.
- Right to Data Portability: If you have provided personal data to us directly, you have the right to request that data in a commonly used, machine-readable format. (In general, our Site does not require you to provide personal data, so this would mainly apply if you contacted us and provided information.)
- Right to Non-Discrimination: If you exercise any of your rights under privacy laws (for instance, opting out of data collection), we will not treat you differently. Users who exercise their privacy rights will continue to have access to the Site and its features on equal terms.
To exercise your rights or if you have any privacy-related requests, please contact us at sumbug@gmail.com. We may ask you to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests, to ensure that we are protecting your data from unauthorized access. We will respond to your inquiry or request within the time frame required by applicable law (for example, under GDPR, typically within one month).
Children’s Privacy
Our Site and services are not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because we do not require any account registration or personal details to use the calculators, children are able to use the Site without providing personal data. If you are under 13, please only use our Site with parental guidance.
If you are a parent or guardian and you believe that your child under 13 may have provided us with personal information (for example, by emailing us a question), please contact us. We will promptly take steps to delete that information from our records and refrain from using it.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. If we make significant changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the bottom of this policy, and we may provide a more prominent notice (such as a banner on the Site) to inform users of the changes. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed about how we are protecting your information.
Your continued use of the Site after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
